This work forms part of a series begun while working for a year in the Patriot Hall studios Edinburgh. It is inspired by pictish symbol stones which are found throughout Scotland. The stones are carved with symbols and a language called 'ogham' which archaeologists have struggled to decode.
This series takes the initial exploration in Series 1 of the symbols found on pictish standing stones in Scotland. The work reflects the stones in the landscape by using strong verticals on which to place the symbols and the 'ogham' language.
Time Translated continues Ruth’s passion for the mysterious and fascinating world of pre historic sites and symbols is imaginatively woven into her work.
The work in the archive was completed between 2007 and 2010, like my current work in Series 1 and 2 colour was a major preoccupation. A large part of the work explores the margins of the landscape where the land meets the sea.
